Product Details

Rifaximin is an antibiotic from the rifamycin group, which acts mainly in the intestines, with almost no absorption into the blood. It is available in coated tablets and granules for suspension.

How it works: Rifaximin blocks the enzymes of bacteria, which stops their reproduction.

When to use:

Rifaximin is used to treat infections of the gastrointestinal tract:

  • acute intestinal infections;
  • traveler's diarrhea;
  • excessive growth of bacteria in the intestines;
  • liver encephalopathy;
  • intestinal diverticulosis;
  • chronic intestinal inflammation;
  • prevention of infections after intestinal surgery.

Who can't take it:

Rifaximin is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • allergy to the drug or its components;
  • diarrhea with fever and blood in the stool;
  • intestinal obstruction;
  • severe intestinal ulcers;
  • age under 12 years.

Caution: the drug is prescribed for people with kidney problems, and it is not recommended to take it with certain medications and hormonal contraceptives.

How to take:

Rifaximin is taken orally with water, regardless of food. The dosage depends on the condition:

  • Diarrhea: for adults and children over 12 years of age, take 200 mg every 6 hours for up to 3 days.
  • Hepatic encephalopathy: 400 mg every 8 hours.
  • Infection prevention after surgery: 400 mg every 12 hours, starting 3 days before surgery.
  • Overgrowth syndrome: 400 mg every 8-12 hours.
  • Diverticulosis: 200-400 mg every 8-12 hours.

The treatment course should not exceed 7 days. A second course is possible 20-40 days after consulting a doctor.

Side effects:

  • digestive problems (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain);
