Pyostacin: an antibiotic for the treatment of bacterial infections

Pyostacin is an antibiotic based on pristinamycin. It belongs to the macrolide group and is used to combat various bacterial infections.

Form of release

The drug is available in the form of round, film-coated tablets. The tablets are packed in blisters made of metallized foil and placed in a cardboard box along with the instructions.

Pharmacological action

Pristinamycin blocks protein synthesis in bacteria, which slows down their growth. As a result, the cell membranes become fragile and are destroyed. In high doses, the drug has a bactericidal effect.

Piestacin is effective against a wide range of pathogenic bacteria.

Indications for use

The drug is prescribed in the following cases:

• Staphylococcal, streptococcal, meningococcal, gonococcal, and pneumococcal infections;
• Diseases of the bronchopulmonary system (whooping cough, acute maxillary sinusitis, chronic bronchitis);
• Anthrax;
• Oral infections (such as periodontitis);
• Tetanus;
• Skin infections;
• Severe forms of acne;
• Sexually transmitted diseases (syphilis, chlamydia);
• Mycobacteriosis, toxoplasmosis, and cryptosporidiosis in patients with HIV.

Piostatin is also used before and after colon surgery to prevent sepsis.

Contraindications

The drug is contraindicated in the following cases:

• Individual intolerance to pristinamycin or other components;
• Allergy to macrolide antibiotics;
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding;
• Age under 6 years.

Side effects

The following side effects may occur:

• Abdominal pain;
• Nausea, heartburn, heaviness in the stomach;
• Skin rash, itching.

Method of administration and doses

The dosage and duration of treatment are determined by the doctor depending on the disease.

For adults: 4-8 tablets per day, divided into 2-3 doses. For children over 6 years of age: the dosage is calculated at 50 mg of the drug per 1 kg of body weight.

Tablets are taken after meals, with water. The course of treatment usually lasts 4-10 days.

Drug interaction

It is not recommended to combine Piostatin with:

• Colchicine - dangerous side effects may occur;
• Indirect anticoagulants - the risk of bleeding increases;
• Immunosuppressants - their metabolism slows down;
• Antacids - the absorption of the antibiotic is impaired.
