Norfloxacin 400 mg is an antimicrobial agent in the form of film-coated tablets. There are 10 tablets in each package. The drug inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase, exerting a bactericidal effect.
Indications
Norfloxacin is used to treat infectious and inflammatory diseases caused by sensitive microorganisms. These include:
- Infections of the urinary tract (cystitis, pyelonephritis, pyelitis).
- Chronic bacterial prostatitis.
- Uncomplicated gonorrhea.
- Bacterial infections of the gastrointestinal tract.
- Prevention of recurrent infections of the urinary tract, bacterial infections in patients with granulocytopenia, and traveler's diarrhea.
Method of administration and dosage
The drug is taken on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal, with water. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the disease:
- Complicated urinary tract infections: 400 mg twice a day, 10-21 days.
- Chronic bacterial prostatitis: 400 mg twice a day, 4 weeks or longer.
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections in men: 400 mg twice a day, 7-14 days.
- Acute uncomplicated cystitis in women: 400 mg twice a day, 3-7 days.
In case of renal insufficiency (creatinine clearance less than 30 ml/min), the dose should be halved or taken once a day.
Special instructions
- During long-term treatment, urine analysis for crystalluria is monitored.
- Do not exceed the recommended daily dose, and drink enough fluids.
- Norfloxacin should be taken 2 hours before or after taking medications containing iron, magnesium, calcium, or sucralfate.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy and lactation.
- Age under 15.
- Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
- Allergy to norfloxacin and other quinolones.
Side effects
- Digestive system: nausea, heartburn, diarrhea, abdominal pain.
- CNS: headache, dizziness, fatigue, insomnia, irritability, anxiety.
- Allergic reactions: rash, itching, Quincke's edema.
- Urinary system: interstitial nephritis.
