«Droxydopa» is a synthetic drug from the group of vasopressors, which is an amino acid precursor of norepinephrine.

The effect of the drug: «Droxydopa» narrows blood vessels and increases blood pressure.

Indications for use

The drug is used to treat the symptoms of neurogenic orthostatic hypotension - a sharp drop in pressure when changing the body position due to diseases of the nervous system. It is prescribed for:

• primary autonomic failure (Parkinson's disease, multiple systemic atrophy);
• dopamine-beta-hydroxylase deficiency;
• non-diabetic autonomic neuropathy.

Before taking the drug, it is necessary to consult a doctor.

Contraindications

It is not recommended to take Droxodopa in the following cases:

• hypersensitivity to the drug's components;
• pheochromocytoma (an adrenal gland tumor that causes excessive hormone production);
• angle-closure glaucoma (increased intraocular pressure);
• severe coronary artery disease;
• uncontrolled hypertension;
• hyperthyroidism (excessive production of thyroid hormones);
• severe renal failure;
• pregnancy and breastfeeding (only if the benefit to the mother outweighs the risk to the child).

Method of administration and doses

The initial dose is 100 mg three times a day: in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening, at least 3 hours before bedtime. If necessary, the dose can be increased by 100 mg three times a day every 24 to 48 hours. The maximum daily dose is 1800 mg.

Features of administration:

• Monitor blood pressure before starting treatment and after increasing the dose.
• The drug should be taken continuously, regardless of meals.
• Capsules should not be chewed or crushed; they should be swallowed whole.

The effectiveness of treatment is assessed after 2 weeks.

Side effects

Possible side effects include:

• headache and dizziness;
• nausea;
• fatigue;
• increased blood pressure.
